Special Education

The Rhode Island Department of Corrections Educational Services provides special education and related services to all eligible inmates consistent with the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004. Eligible inmates are 22 years of age or younger who had either been identified as a child with a disability or had an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in their previous educational placement. Services include, but are not limited to, achievement testing, ability testing, and the creation of an IEP.

Inmates 22 years of age or younger are screened for eligibility. Records are requested from the last school attended for inmates found eligible and interested in pursuing their education. An educational evaluation will be completed with the consent of the inmate, or the parent/guardian of inmates who are minors. The Team of Qualified Professionals (TQP) will meet to review the results and develop an IEP when appropriate.

Students receiving Special Education services receive the same services they were entitled to when they were enrolled outside the Department of Corrections. They have the support of high qualified Special Educators, as well as tutors and support-professionals. In addition to the day-to-day support in the classroom, students are also served by the Director of Special Education. The director monitors student eligibility and progress and maintains the legal integrity of the program. This team of individuals is motivated and dedicated to all students' success and is dedicated to ensuring all students have the opportunity for education.
