The Rhode Island Department of Corrections Training Academy is responsible for developing training curriculum that will produce highly trained, professional and competent staff throughout the Department. The Training Academy is also responsible for the recruitment, selection and training of entry-level Correctional Officers; orientation for all the Department's new employees and volunteers; and the development and implementation of in-service training for all Correctional staff.

To maintain a standard of excellence, the Training Academy is dedicated to the development of curriculum and Department-furnished instructors. The Academy curriculum is regularly reviewed, updated and revised to meet the needs of today's corrections professional. The Academy will prepare new staff for success in the corrections profession; enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities of experienced staff and maintain a high standard of professionalism.

In-service training consists of forty (40) hours per year for all uniformed personnel to adhere to standards and assure that staff are kept up-to-date on current policies and practices. Training Academy staff also develop additional training programs from correctional staff, including uniform, civilian, supervisory and contracted, to maintain and upgrade competency levels and to assure the application of state-of-the-art training of correctional practices.

Training Academy staff consists of (9) nine full-time instructors, (2) two Training Supervisors and an administrative support team.

Hours of operation are 7am-11pm, Monday through Friday; with office hours from 8:30am-4pm, Monday through Friday.
