The John J. Moran Medium Security Facility (MED) was constructed from 1990 to 1992, for a cost of $65,000,000. The facility grounds cover 29 acres and houses sentenced adult male offenders classified as medium custody. The facility has the highest inmate bed capacity figure of any RIDOC facility, with 1,186 available beds. Extensive programming is provided with the goal of preparing inmates for successful return to their communities. MED also has several correctional industries which include a garment and furniture/upholstery shop, a license plate shop, and carpentry and auto body shops. The facility also has an education and programming building, a gym and a large outdoor recreation yard.
